Flames PressDate: Jan 30, 2010 Extra Shootout Innings, Flames Win 6-5
On Saturday, January 31 the Quad City Jr. Flames (20-16-0-3) hosted the Chicago Force (16-16-2-3) at the Quad City Sports Center. Despite trailing on four seperate ocassions in regulation, and twice in a shoot out Quad City slid past Chicago 6-5 in nine exciting shoot out rounds. The victory was the Flames ninth straight overall and Chicago's Matthew Spica opened the scoring immediately. Spica caught a pass from Anthony Domico, and while falling backward in the slot he wristed the puck past David Jacobson seven seconds in to the game. The Flames managed to respond in the first. Luke Dannenburg threw a hard pass from the far boards that was redirected by Conrad Bernard in front of Robert Kennedy. Jerry Rank was given the secondary assist. Quad City killed four straight penalties, and blanked the Chicago man-advantage in the first. Scoring remained quiet until the 6:06 mark of the second stanza when the first of five goals were scored within a five minute stint. Thomas Forrest gave Chicago their second lead of the game with a shot from the left point. The Flames answered at 7:44 with a power play goal and the second tying goal of the game. Andy Amendola snuck a sharp angle shot in from the corner. Paul Manderfield and Keegan Kavanaugh listed the helpers. Matthew Spica of Chicago didn't waste much time putting the Flames down by one once again. Spica's second goal of the game came with a snipe on the door step. The Flames proved to be resilient during the second. After trailing for the third time, Chad Hickson scored in the slot off a face off win from Kavanaugh at 10:15 of the second. Less than 30 seconds later Rank scored the Flames first go ahead goal at 10:51. Chad Hickson hooked up the play for his second point of the period. Quad City pounded the Chicago cage and netminder, Kennedy, with 17 shots in the middle period. Despite trailing 4-3 with nearly a quarter of the final period left, Louis Educate scored his league leading 41 goal of the year from Austin Cihak after a nice wrap around. Chicago regained the lead for the fourth time of the game 31 seconds later. Geno Melone put the puck past Jacobson. Domico and Spica helped set up the play. The Flames weren't ready to be doused. Less than two minutes later at 16:57 Amendola cranked home his second goal of the game. Chad Hickson helped with his third point of the game, along with Eberline. The teams headed to overtime, but neither squad managed find the final offensive touch. During the shoot out Quad City found themselves trailing twice after goals from Educate and Melone. Kavanaugh and Prygon both scored to help keep the Flames alive until Hickson buried the game winner during the ninth round. The Quad City Jr. Flames play Chicago for the second time tomorrow at the Quad City Sports Center. The puck drops at 12:00 pm ct, and the Flames Pre-game Show begins at 11:40 am with Mike Rieck.
